The Library Of Congress was created so that research could be conducted on behalf of the United States Congress.

Congress first approved the Library in 1800 and it was located in the Capitol building. In 1814, British troops burned the Capitol and destroyed the Library.

Former President Thomas Jefferson offered his personal library to replace the lost one. Jefferson was a collector of books who had a huge library.

Today the Library contains more than just books. It contains all manner of media from audio recordings, to videos to numerous Internet projects.
