Still Alive, Really

Contrary to popular appearances, I am in fact still alive!

I'm sorry I haven't finished up the current storyline. A combination of factors (most of which I won't bore you with) have made it difficult to get more strips done.

The two factors I WILL bore you with are these:

  1. I've written myself into a corner
  2. The strip hasn't really caught on with readers

I've set up the story to require me to do something to a character I really like that I hate to do. If you've read the strip from the beginning, you know this flashback ain't going to end well for the host of the show... Didn't realize I'd come to like him so much...

I'm working on a bunch of things at once right now, but I do hope to come back to Funzietown and finish out this storyline. I'll leave it on the web and if I get enough response, I may pick the strip back up and do more stories.

Sorry for missing Thursday's comic and being late with today's.

Things are exceedingly hectic right now, and I will probably have a really hard time meeting all the pub dates EXACTLY for a while.

One big thing that is going to slow me down for a bit is a total re-write of the web software. I'm going to re-do the site so that I'll be able to host other comics using Microsoft's new MVC framework. 99% of you won't care or notice the difference, but the geekier amongst you may want to check my other blog for updates on that project.

I just hope everyone will be understanding as I work on what amounts to my third job... :-)

Going to be late today

I'm sorry to report that I'll be late getting today's comic up. Maybe even as late as tomorrow (Friday).

I will be giving a presentation at the Gwinnett, Georgia, Microsoft User Group (GGMUG) tomorrow night, and I've been finishing up my presentation and sample code.

I'll be speaking about Microsoft's new MVC framework for asp.Net. That should be gibberish for about 99% of you and the other 1% will be saying "MVC isn't new! It is a design pattern that's been around since 1979!"

Well in this context it is new to Microsoft, and I think it is very interesting. They are providing an alternative to Web Forms that is more like the Ruby On Rails approach.

I apologize to the 99% who didn't know what I just said and didn't care.

My Heroes Have Always Been Astronauts

When I was a kid my heroes walked on the moon.

My dad would sit us down in front of the television and tell us, "Remember this because it is history being made."

One of my all time favorite ideas was riding around the moon in the moon buggy that was used by Gene Cernan and Jack Schmitt. You can see a picture of it on Captain Cernan's official website.

I had the privilege of meeting Captain Cernan back in the early 1990's when I was photographer for High Tech Month In Georgia. He was keynote speaker, and I was in awe.

When I get through with the next few strips I plan to email Capt. Cernan to send him a link to the comic. I certainly hope he likes it!

The last panel in today's comic is from a famous photograph of Captain Cernan and Ron Evans (the third man in the Apollo 17 crew) taken by Jack Schmitt.

Anyone who remembers the early shuttle flights probably remembers Capt. Cernan from his commentaries as well.

Capt. Cernan has written and spoken widely about trying to inspire the children of today the way I was inspired by his heroics. It's a big universe out there, and it will take big thinkers to explore it.
